Optical Kerr effect in fiber-optic gyroscopes: effects of nonmonochromatic sources

Abstract

Fiber-optic gyroscopes sense rotation by detecting the phase shift experienced by two counterpropagating beams in a Sagnac interferometer. The very small Sagnac phase shifts experienced by the two beams are nonreciprocal for a rotating gyroscope in that the phase shifts seen by the forward beam (intensity l+) and the backward beam (intensity l-) are not equal.1
