Abstract

The polarization stability of optical fibers is significantly improved by birefringent fibers. In optical communication systems, polarization coupling between two eigenpolarizations comes generally from random mechanical deformations of the optical fiber. Thus the polarization stability depends on the statistical property of such deformations. In this paper, the polarization stability is calculated for general randomness of the deformations using the power coupling equations.
