Abstract

Long lengths of optical cables using multimode optical fibers have been successfully installed in ducts, lashed on telephone poles, and buried directly in the ground for telecommunication applications. Recently cables using single-mode fibers have been designed, fabricated, and successfully used in deep-sea applications. Furthermore, lightweight tactical military cables are now being developed which will be able to survive the rigors of battlefield conditions. Due to the wide variety of specific applications, numerous optical cable designs have been and are being developed.
