Abstract

Recently 0.83-µm lasers have been used to power a variety of fiber-optic interferometric sensors.1 To realize the high sensitivity projected for these devices, it will be necessary to operate these sensors with long lengths of optical fiber. The use of long-wavelength lasers in these systems, owing to the small scattering loss, leads to theoretical sensitivities up to an order of magnitude greater than obtainable with 0.83-µm lasers. In this work we have measured the noise and spectral properties of a number of 1.3-µm lasers, since these properties detemine the usefulness of these lasers as sources in fiber-optic sensor systems.
