Abstract
Both low-loss and low-material dispersions occur near 1.3μm in high-quality GeO2-P2O5-SiO2 optical fibers. High-bit-rate LED systems1 operating at 1.3μm are possible with graded-index multimode fibers. It has been demonstrated experimentally that LED/ PIN systems2 with standard FT3 graded-index multimode fiber (50-μm core diameter, 0.23 N.A.) can operate at high bit rates over long distances (274 Mbit/sec over 7.5 km or 44.7 Mbit/sec over 23.3 km) without repeaters. However, to provide the necessary margins and noise penalty allocation for an actual system, an optimized fiber which can couple more light from a high-speed LED source and still maintain high bandwidth and low loss is required.
