Cleaved-coupled-cavity lasers with large cavity length ratios

Abstract

We report results obtained with the first cleaved-coupled-cavity (C3) lasers having large cavity length ratios. C3 lasers with approximately equal lengths have produced a highly single-mode output,1 but the temperature, bias current, and modulation must be controlled to prevent mode hopping. Coldren et al.2 have predicted that coupled-cavity lasers with one short section (30 µm or less) will be more stable than approximately equal length C3 lasers. The construction of such lasers requires the introduction of new fabrication techniques since it is extremely difficult to cleave significantly dissimilar lengths.
