Abstract
Optical communication systems operating at rates in the gigabit per second range are currently being explored. To study temporal limits on components and systems, it is necessary to use a source that produces short optical pulses at wavelengths throughout the near-IR spectral range. In this paper we will describe the use of picosecond pulses from optically pumped, ultrashort cavity, semiconductor film lasers to study system components for ultrahigh-speed optical-fiber communication.
