Abstract
Lightwave communications systems have offered the promise of long-distance high-bandwidth transmission (>100 Gbit-km/sec). To this end work is continuing in development of high-speed lasers and photodetectors and of optical fibers with low loss and dispersion. However, what is additionally required for practical implementation of such systems are electronic integrated circuits capable of operating at speeds consistent with these data rates.
