Abstract

Single-mode fibers are gaining importance in telecommunications since they allow high-bit-rate transmission with long repeater spacings in both the 1.3- and 1.5-μm wavelength regions. The large information capacity can be further exploited by wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) as either an initial installation or a system upgrade at a later date.
