Performance estimates for a coherent optical communication system

Abstract

Single-frequency GaAlAs lasers have essentially Lorentzian line spectra with FWHM linewidths Δv of 5-8 MHz at 15-mW facet output power.1 The frequency noise of the laser (see Ref. 2 for experimentally determined spectra) contributing to the nonzero linewidth will degrade communication performance of a semiconductor laser communication system using frequency shift keying and heterodyne detection when compared with a system using a zero linewidth laser. The optimum FSK demodulator makes a maximum likelihood decision on which tone was sent. For nonzero linewidth laser signals, this demodulator is difficult to derive analytically. Instead the optimum zero linewidth demodulator Is used in our receiver. Performance degradation can be estimated by comparing the performance with a system using zero linewidth lasers.
