Abstract

In the manufacture of optical fiber, many different parameters must be measured to assure adequate process and quality control. The cost of these measurements is significant for all types of fiber, and manufacturers are constantly evaluating ways to reduce such costs. In this paper, consideration is limited to graded-index multimode and depressed cladding single-mode fiber manufacture using the modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) process. Since many fiber measurements are really dictated by the end use of the fiber, there is a further division in fiber measurements for multifiber cable, single-fiber cable, and device fiber.
