Abstract
Many systems, such as towed cable arrays, rotating antennas, and movable weapons platforms, require a high-performance fiber-optic connection between components which rotate with respect to each other. Previously reported optical rotary joints required active components, had excessive optical losses, operated only In one direction, or were of large size. The optical rotary joint developed by ITT EOPD under NRL contract is based on ITT expanded-beam connector technology commonly associated with tactical military connectors. Use of this device, in combination with available wave- length division multiplexing techniques, provides simple multichannel bidirectional links between rotating structures
