Abstract
Electronically controllable optical bypass switches are key components in one type of fiber optic network (Fig. 1). In such a network, the switches must have two properties. First, they must be fail-safe: if power fails at a terminal, a passive link between the remaining terminals must be maintained. Second, they must provide a high degree of isolation between transmitter and receiver ports when the terminal is active, so that the retransmitted signal will not mask the weaker incoming signal at the receiver.
