Abstract

Ten years ago, at the time of the first Williamsburg meeting, most of the key data needed to design fiber systems was available, but the technology was struggling, and thus the designer's vision was limited. Today, fiber systems are in volume production and are the only realistic choice for many cable systems. More startling is the fact that many are already third-generation systems, following the replacement of 850-nm graded-index and 1300-nm graded-index systems by 1300-nm single mode.
