Abstract
To realize the potential of extending optoelectronic and electronic technologies to bandwidths near or beyond 100 GHz, a great deal of fundamental work must be undertaken. Recent advances in high-speed photodetectors and a new electrooptic sampling technique provide for the first time the means to generate and measure electronic signals with bandwidths in excess of 100 GHz. Further advances in high-speed light modulation and transceiver electronics are required before system performance even approaching 100 GHz is feasible.
