Abstract

Linewidth requirements for lasers to be used in coherent optical fiber systems are stringent, particularly if phase-locked demodulation is used, as in homodyne and coherent PSK heterodyne schemes, for example. Typically, a Lorentzian linewidth of the order of 10 kHz is found to be necessary, which requires some external line-narrowing elements if a semiconductor laser is to be used.
