Spectral linewidth of a variable-gap cleaved-coupled-cavity laser

Abstract

A narrow spectral linewidth is essential if semiconductor lasers are to be useful as signal sources in coherent lightwave communication systems. Recently, we measured the spectral linewidth of three types of long-wavelength single-frequency semiconductor laser: a GRIN-rod external-coupled-cavity (GRECC) laser; a cleaved-coupled-cavity (C3) laser with fixed air gap; and a heterostructure ridge-overgrown distributed feedback (HRO-DFB) laser.1 The results showed a linewidth-power product of 15, 30, and 120 MHz mW, respectively, tor these devices.
