Broadened Bandwidth of Concatenated Optical Fiber

Abstract

Recent progress in optical fiber production technology has enabled good reproducibility of wideband GI fibers. However, as a result of less deviation in index profile α, the wavelength of maximum bandwidth is distributed on one side of the operating wavelength. This reduces the alpha-profile compensation and increases the value of γ, the bandwidth concatenation factor; thus the concatenated bandwidth ft markedly decreases. To broaden ft, a short length of step-index (SI) fiber was inserted between GI fibers at the splicing point. The ft was broadened by 10-20 %, and the insertion loss of SI fiber was from 0.2 to 0.7 dB. Both experimental and theoretical studies were made.
