Abstract
Semiconductor laser amplifiers can be used as linear amplifiers or repeaters to extend the separation between regenerative repeaters in an optical transmission system.1 Traveling wave amplifiers are the most suitable for this application from stability considerations but have the disadvantage of a high spontaneous noise level. It is important, therefore, to assess the effect of this noise in a system context and to determine the degree of optical filtering necessary at the receiver. For some amplifier applications, for example, as a receiver preamplifier, stringent optical filtering is required which limits the usefulness of the device2
