Abstract

Optical fiber systems now provide only pointpoint communication. Greater advantage can be made of the large bandwidth inherent in guided wave optical communications if the information processing and routing can also be done optically. Electrically controlled optical switching has been demonstrated with Ti:LiNbO3 directional couplers. Modest numbers of switches have been integrated on one substrate.1,2
