Abstract
The ribbon-based cable design (used in many multimode fiber installations) makes it practical to rapidly respllce ribbons for field restoration. A rapid ribbon splice (RRS) has been developed that has long-term stability over a wide temperature range (−40 to 170°F), produces service restoral in as little as 20 min (1.75 min/fiber), and provides permanent low-loss splices (xmean ≤ 0.3 dB). Because the splice design is low in cost and relatively easily accomplished, it can also be used for initial installation splicing.
