Abstract
Long-haul high-capacity transmission systems are already available which exploit the low loss and dispersion of current monomode fiber at 1300-nm wavelength.1 The present system permits a further increase in capacity by accepting and multiplexing together either four 140-Mbit/sec or twelve 45- Mbit/sec Input streams and transmitting them over a single fiber. The performance of the optical devices employed ensures that section lengths in excess of 30 km are readily achieved using current production fiber. Details of system performance will be presented.
