Abstract

Recently, digital transmission systems with a bit rate of around a gigabit/sec have been studied for large capacity transmission systems using long- wavelength optical devices and single-mode optical fibers.1-3 In accordance with the increase In information amount to be transmitted, a higher bit rate will become necessary in the near future. To realize such an ultrahigh-bit-rate optical transmission system, basic experimental studies on 4-Gbit/sec optical modulation and demodulation were carried out using a 1.3-μm DC: PBH LD and a 30-μmϕ Ge APD.
