Abstract

Distributed feedback lasers have been used in transmission experiments1 for increased transmission capacity and distance. Drastic improvement of the device performance has been accomplished even with the use of the second-order grating and the simplest cleaved facets. To get a stable single lateral mode operation, conventional BH, DC-PBH, and ridge-type structures have been used, since their active layers are flat and suitable for grating preparation.
