Abstract

In the past few years, as long-wavelength lightwave systems have pushed toward ever higher bit rates, it has become evident that avalanche photodetectors (APDs) will be required to obtain maximum receiver sensitivities. Fortunately, great strides have been made in these devices since the early work on simple InGaAsP and InGaAs homojunction structures. However, much more complex structures with stringent design criteria have been required to achieve these improvements.
