Fluorosilicate substrata tubes to eliminate leaky-mode losses in MCVD single-mode fibers with depressed-index cladding

Abstract

Inside deposition processes remain competitive for production of lightguides because the substrate tube becomes the outermost cladding. However, fiber designs based on a decreased cladding index require thick deposits to overcome leaky-mode losses resulting from the higher index of the outer silica tube. For the first time such losses are eliminated by use of substrate tubes whose index is matched to that of the fluorine-doped deposited cladding.
