Abstract

I report the fabrication and testing of an integrated Ti:LiNbO3 optical switch array of greater complexity than any hitherto described,1 a 1–16-output switch that operates on light of arbitrary polarization at a wavelength of 1.3 μm. The switch array was made on a single crystal of Z-cut LiNb03 54 mm long and 10 mm wide. It consists of 15 directional-coupler switches and more than ½ m of single-mode titanium-diffused waveguide. Typical transmission loss is ~5 dB for the TM mode and 11 dB for the TE; typical cross-talk rejection of the worst of the unwanted paths is > 10 dB. The switch requires about ±25 and 100 V for the two states of the individual switch elements.
