Cable cutoff wavelength and attenuation of the LP11 mode

Abstract

The attenuation of the LP11 mode is the only fiber parameter that needs to be specified to completely quantify the system phenomenon known as modal noise.1 The conventional fiber specification relating to modal noise is the effective cutoff wavelength of the LP11 mode rather than its attenuation. However, there is no means to infer the modal noise of a system from the effective cutoff wavelength that is independent of fiber design. This study proposes a generic description of fiber cutoff specifying the LP11 mode attenuation, which completely determines the fiber’s sensitivity to modal noise, and provides a measurement technique to directly measure this attenuation in both uncabled and cabled fibers.
