Abstract

To exploit coherent optical communications in broadband networks it is necessary to understand in detail how system performance is affected by laser linewidth. We outline a comprehensive model of heterodyne ASK systems using lasers with appreciable phase noise, and we report results of detailed evaluation of the trade-off between the linewidth of the lasers used and the IF bandwidth. We compare our results with previous results.1,2
