Optical fiber interconnect to a single-mode laser diode

Abstract

The efficient optical interconnect of a single-mode fiber to a 1300-nm single-mode laser diode requires that the fiber and laser be retained in submicron alignment. Alignment and retention requirements are most severe when the fiber core is lensed to maximize optical power into the fiber.1-4 The full capability of increased optical coupling into a lensed vs a butt-coupled fiber can only be realized if the laser package and assembly system enable accurate fiber positioning and retention and postretention positional stability.
