Dispersion-shifted and dispersion-flattened single-mode designs

Abstract

Over the last few years, advances in fiber-optic technology have allowed the introduction and rapid commercialization of single-mode systems in long-haul applications. Most if not all of this growth has been in single-mode systems operating in the 1300-nm window. But the technology and applications continue to advance toward systems with higher bit rate and longer repeater spacings. In addition, trends toward using single-mode fibers in feeder and possibly even in local distribution applications seem to be evolving. To address these needs, active research and development are going on in all aspects of the fiber-optic technology including the advanced single-mode designs. A number of groups in the U.S.A. and abroad have been working on a number of these single-mode designs including silica-core,1 dispersion-shifted,2–5 and dispersion-flattened6–9 fibers. A framework for classifying and comparing the various designs will be given. Based on this, a review of these designs for telecommunications will be presented.
