Abstract

The use of LEDs in single mode fiber (SMF) transmission systems is very attractive for local 1oop app1ications because of cost and reliability advantages of LEDs over laser diodes [1-3]. High speed LED operation is desirable in order to meet the growing demand for the transmission capacity in coming broadband networks. Recently, 560Mb/s- 25km [4] and 1.2Gb/s-10km [5] SMF transmission experiments have been reported.
