A 35 km Satellite Earth Station 1.3μm Fiber Optic Microwave Multicarrier Transmission System

Abstract

In this paper, we report the first field experiment of a C-band satellite earth station fiber optic multichannel transmission system which has been continuously running since early November, 1986. The system transports a multicarrier ensemble of downlink C-band satellite video, data and voice signals in a full 500 MHz bandwidth (3.7-4.2 GHz) from an earth station to a remote indoor receiver. A thorough assessment of the fiber link performance was made by measuring video signal quality, since satellite transmission is predominantly for video services. The high capacity and low attenuation of optical fiber are exploited for extending the reach of existing satellite-based networks, serving as a link between earth station and terrestrial networks. Advantages are gained over alternatives, including coaxial cable, which has limited range, and terrestrial microwave, which is vulnerable to interference and may be difficult to use in cities that are already crisscrossed with many microwave routes.
