Abstract

Modal birefringence is the main parameter characterizing the polarization- maintaining properties of optical waveguides. For HB-type fibers the beat- length IB measurement must be accurate owing to its shortness. Among known radiometric techniques for IB determination, precise results have been recently achieved using the elastooptic properties of the fiber.1 Another approach relies on optical heterodyne Interferometry.2 Using this technique, a new polarimeter has been demonstrated, which provides a real-time display/ measurement of the SOP at the fiber output.3,4
