Abstract
Upgrade of single-mode optical fiber systems from transmission at 1300-1550 nm requires knowledge of environmentally and physically induced attenuation increases at long wavelength. These increases may arise from physical bends (macrobends) of the fiber in locations such as splice enclosures or from cable-induced microbends. The thermal expansion mismatch among fiber, coating, and cable materials may also give microbending-in-duced attenuation increases at low temperatures.
