Bending loss resistance in single-mode fiber

Abstract

The matched cladding and depressed cladding step-index fiber designs account for almost all the single-mode fiber installed in systems to date. Both designs provide a zero-dispersion wavelength near 1310 nm, and both achieve low intrinsic loss at 1310 and 1550 nm. Although the depressed cladding fiber has a slightly more complex index profile, it is capable of single-mode operation at a higher V number than the matched cladding design. Consequently, the microbending and macrobending performance of the two designs should be distinguishable. Three experiments comparing the bend loss susceptibility of matched clad and depressed clad single-mode fibers have been completed. They are a tension-wind test, press test, and macrobending test.
