Abstract

In high-speed optical fiber transmission systems using laser diodes, optical feedback-induced laser instabilities, such as laser Intensity noise or turn-on delay, cause power penalties in receiver sensitivities.1,2 In particular, distributed feedback laser diodes (DFB-LDs) emit a highly coherent optical beam and normally have lower reflectivity output facets to restrict the Fabry-Perot-mode oscillation. Therefore, they are likely to be influenced by the optical feedback. This paper reports theoretical and experimental evaluations of feedback noise-induced power penalties in high-speed transmission systems. This paper also reports required noise suppression and feedback beam isolation for the DFB-LD transmitters.
