Advances In single-mode interconnection technology

Abstract

European progress in single-mode interconnection technology was reviewed recently.1 A highlight of that paper was the mass-produced core- centered connector which maintains a typical loss of 0.2 dB (without Index matching) despite temperature cyclings between –20 and + 70°C and more than 500 times repeated connections. Another interesting achievement was the procedure to splice fibers with the aid of a local injection and monitoring method, which produces a typical loss of 0.02 dB and the guarantee that not a single splice will have a high loss (above 0.14 dB). A second far end measurement is, therefore, not necessary; the splice can be completed in situ. Similar results have been reported by Japanese and U.S. authors.
