Abstract
This paper describes the first use of a single optical fiber, with an optical interference cavity formed at one end, to transduce pressure changes into changes in sensor reflectivity. Fiber-optic pressure transducers previously reported for biomedical applications1,2 use multiple fibers and are not based on interferometric techniques. Other interference-type transducers (for temperature measurement) have been reported,3 but our sensor is unique in that the fiber tip itself is used as one of the elements of the interference cavity.
