Optical switching in directional couplers by direct control of coupling strength

Abstract

Recent interest in large switch arrays has generated demand for fabrication- tolerant devices with low-voltage-length products (VL=L·|V¯|),low optical and electrical crosstalk, and a minimum number of electrodes. In LiNbO3, only phase mismatch (Δβ) switches have achieved low ML. The Δβ-reversal switch is the commonest practical structure, easing fabrication tolerances at the expense of extra electrodes. However, little attention has yet been given to Δk switches1 because of the much higher drive levels predicted.
