Abstract
Previously reported techniques for the determination of chromatic dispersion in optical fibers have generally involved measurement of group delay characteristics as a function of wavelength.1,2 Data are then fitted to empirical mathematical forms such as the Sellmeier equation and dispersion obtained only by calculation from the fit parameters. In practice, these mathematical functions assume applicability to all fibers of similar type despite differences in fiber fabrication, production variability, material impurities, etc.
