Abstract
Typically single-wavelength transceivers are plagued by unacceptable levels of optical crosstalk. Sources of this crosstalk are reflections originating from discrete components within the device and/or from mechanical connections between the device and transmission fiber. We report a low-crosstalk single-wavelength optical transceiver which utilizes a 1 × 2 nontapered fused liber coupler. A schematic drawing of the transceiver is shown in Fig. 1. Because of the use of the nontapered fused coupler the component related crosstalk Is virtually eliminated as is the need for a separate mechanical connection, since there is fiber-to-fiber continuity between the coupler and transmission fiber.
