Standing-wave structure optical waveguide modulator using a resonant electrode at 10 GHz

Abstract

A coplanar waveguide resonator with matched input impedance is introduced as a novel electrode for a standing-wave type guided-wave light modulator. Light modulators of this waveguide structure have been built, in many cases, as the lumped1 or traveling-wave type2 for wideband operation. It is, however, believed that modulators do not need to be operated by a baseband signal, especially for higher frequency modulation. The necessary modulating power is expected to decrease, while the bandwidth is sacrificed with the standing-wave structure which operates within a limited range around its resonant frequency. Application of the standing-wave modulator to signal sampling has already been reported,3 and microwave performance has also been discussed.4
