Abstract

Balanced-bridge optical switches were proposed1 and demonstrated2 early in the development of integrated optics. The performance of these switches was modest by current standards. We report on 2 × 2 balanced-bridge optical switches, operating at the three common laser diode wavelengths, with performance characteristics comparable with those currently achieved with other switch designs and with demonstrated manufacturability.
