Optical broadcast network using coherent detection

Abstract

The distribution of signals from a single transmitter to multiple receivers via single-mode fiber can be achieved by a variety of network topologies (star, ring, tree, bus). This work proposes a novel point-to-multipoint distribution topology using a totally passive fiber bus and coherent detection technology without the need for a local oscillator at each station. The advantages of this architecture include (1) equal signal power at each station, (2) increased number of stations served by a given fiber and source (relative to other bus distribution systems), (3) identical receivers and taps at each station, (4) colocation of transmitting laser and local oscillator laser, (5) no need for a local oscillator at each station, (6) high degree of sharing of fiber and source, and (7) graceful growth to a fully coherent system transporting multiple wavelengths as coherent technology matures.
