Single-mode in-line blocking filter using fiber lenses and a rotary splice

Abstract

Fused fiber WDMs are being utilized to increase the capacity of fiber-optic systems. The crosstalk of these devices is >16 dB for two discrete wavelengths but degrades to ~10 dB over the wavelength range required by some systems. Thus, to have a WDM system with >30 dB of crosstalk it is necessary to provide at least 20 dB of additional filtration. We report an inline blocking filter (filter with pigtails) that consists of single-mode fibers fused to graded-index fiber lenses, a dielectric interference filter, and an AT&T rotary splice.1
