Abstract
Multiple optical paths are likely to become increasingly common in future single-mode fiber-optic communication systems. They may be intentionally incorporated to Implement In-line optical signal processing as in bit rate limiters [Figs. 1(a) and (b)],1 or they may result from parasitic effects such as multimodal propagation In a link segment or reflections at connector interfaces [e.g.. Fig. 1(c)]. For systems that are essentially single mode (ignoring polarization degeneracy), the contributions from these multiple paths add on an amplitude basis so that interference phenomena are bound to take place.
