Abstract
A brief review of the functions and applications of passive components in present and future systems is followed by a detailed description of the three main technologies being pursued for passive components: integrated optic; microoptic; and fiber optic. Emphasis is placed on the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies as well as the optical performance of commercially available devices using these technologies. Optical fiber taps, splitters, couplers, filters, and other interconnection configurations are covered.
