Optical receivers for 4-Gbit/s homodyne phase diversity transmission

Abstract

For high-speed coherent transmission, homodyne phase diversity receivers seem to offer significant advantages over heterodyne or conventional homodyne schemes. An optical phase-locked loop is not needed, and the bandwidth can be kept low compared to heterodyne schemes. On the other hand, diversity receivers require two or more identical signal processing branches.1,2 In particular, the gain and relative phase in the branches are required to be ideally matched.
