Abstract
The performance of current fiber-optic transmission systems is limited primarily by the optoelectronic components rather than the fiber. With constantly improving, fast single-frequency lasers, the bandwidth of future systems will be determined by the Fourier transform of the information rather than the source linewidth. At high powers self-phase modulation (SPM), which is caused by the nonlinear dependence of the refractive index on intensity, must be considered. This paper investigates the effects of first- and higher-order chromatic dispersion. SPM, and loss on single-channel direct detection fiber-optic systems. Results indicate that SPM will affect high-bitrate (>10-Gbit/s) systems at peak powers above 5 mW (≈1.5-mW average). Dispersion compensation with a grating telescope is also discussed.
